The Scout Section is for young people (Boys and Girls), aged between 10 1/2 and 14 years. The Scout Troop is the third and final Section in the Scout Group, after which time the young person can join the District Explorer Scout Section (14 to 18 years)
Scouts are encouraged to take part in a wide range of activities. "Participation" rather than meeting set standards is the key approach and for the Scout who wants to be recognised for his or her achievements there are a number of Challenge Awards and Activity Badges. Scouts take part in a balanced programme centred on the aims of the scout movement; to promote the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential, as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of their local, national and international communities.
Being outdoors is an important part of the programme and a good proportion of time is given to taking part in both traditional outdoor Scouting activities, such as Camping, Hiking, Pioneering, Survival Skills, Cooking and Wide Games as well as a range of adventurous activities, such as Hill Walking, Climbing, Caving, Canoeing and Sailing. Scouts are encouraged to find out about the world in which they live, to know their own abilities, develop their creative talents and to understand the importance of keeping fit and to explore their own values, beliefs and personal attitudes.
The international aspect of scouting has a special appeal and many Scouts now travel abroad during their time in this section.
